Ready to Take Your Career to a Higher Altitude?

A new career chapter changes what you need to learn.

Yet most people continue relying on learning habits built for their previous environment.

The problem is not that they stop learning. Often, they are consuming more information than ever while forgetting too much of what they learn.

They attend training, sit through meetings, capture notes, and strategically learn from the outside world. But too little of that knowledge is available when they need to make a decision, contribute to a discussion, or navigate a high-stakes client conversation.

During a career pivot, that gap can widen quickly and make or break the opportunity.

I Had to Retune My Own System

I experienced this firsthand when I pivoted from operating as a CTO into the fractional CIO world.

I was already deeply familiar with technology and leadership, but that wasn't enough. I needed to understand the fractional CIO discipline at a First Principles level and rapidly build depth across a different set of challenges, technologies, frameworks, and client environments.

That meant retuning my Learning Operating System. I had to recalibrate my inputs, including items like the podcasts I listened to, the RSS feeds I followed, and the YouTube channels I monitored, intentionally surrounding myself with the highest-value information for this new landscape.

I applied the principles that became Leadership Recall: identify the signal, capture and catalog the insights that mattered, deliberately strengthen my recall, and put that knowledge to work.

In practice, I use Notion to capture and catalog what mattered, then Anki to strengthen recall using the same active-recall and spaced-repetition principles medical students use to master demanding material such as anatomy and physiology.

That helped me compress the learning curve, connect the dots faster, and step into conversations prepared to lead well and deliver excellence.

That experience reinforced something I now believe strongly: when your career landscape changes, your learning system has to change with it.

The ramp-up period is especially unforgiving because you're learning while simultaneously proving that you belong in the new role. Get that period right, and you can build credibility quickly. Get it wrong, and a promising career opportunity can unravel before you ever reach your potential.

Recall Creates the Advantage

The advantage doesn't simply go to the person who has access to the most information. Everyone has access to more information than they can possibly consume, especially with AI.

The advantage goes to those who can identify what matters, internalize it, connect it, and recall it when it counts.

Consider enterprise sales. Success depends on connecting what you know about the customer, industry, stakeholders, competitors, and your solution. If those insights remain scattered across notes and systems, you may technically possess the knowledge while still being unable to use it in the moment.

And when you're sitting across from time-starved, impatient executives, they can tell quickly whether you know your stuff. You may only have a few minutes to establish credibility, and fumbling for something you should know can change the trajectory of the conversation.

A search tool can find the idea. AI can summarize it. But only recall allows you to bring it into the conversation.

Fly at a Higher Altitude

If you're going through a career pivot now, or you see one coming, don't leave your learning system behind.

Retuning how you learn can materially compress your learning curve, help you establish credibility faster, and allow you to fly at a much higher altitude in the new landscape.

The advantage doesn't go to the person who consumes the most information.

It goes to the person who can recall what matters most and lead with authority when it counts.
